April Valour in CRPF
As Special DG CRPF, I got the rare opportunity of addressing as CRPF chief at CRPF Shaurya Diwas Ceremony in New Delhi on 9th April, 2010. Sonia Gandhi was the chief guest and P. Chidambaram, HM presided it.
Shaurya Diwas ( Valour Day ) is celebrated every year on this day in the remembrance of extraordinary valour, unparalleled courage, exemplary fortitude and steadfast devotion to duty of CRPF. On 9th April, 1965 only two companies of CRPF at Sardar Post in Rann of Kuchh, Gujarat faced a full fledged brigade attack by Pakistan Army. In this fierce battle, this small CRPF contingent, repulsed the attack of enemy and miraculously defended the frontiers. 34 Pakistani soldiers were neutralised while 4 were apprehended alive. Six brave hearts of CRPF also attained martyrdom on this fateful day. Hardly there is an example in military history of such battles.
CRPF is engaged in wide varieties of duties to maintain internal security. As of April 11 2025, 2264 CRPF personnel have sacrificed their lives in the service of the nqation.
