Operation VIJAY- KARGIL War (3rd May-26th July 1999)

The Kargil war was decisively won by Indian military. The war was in response to Pakistani infiltration into our side of LOC in Kargil and Dras sectors of J&K. The war which started on 3rd May 1999, had three major phases. First, Pakistan infiltrated forces into the Indian-controlled section of Kashmir and occupied strategic locations enabling it to bring NH1 within range of its artillery fire.

The next stage consisted of India discovering the infiltration and mobilising forces to respond to it. The final stage involved major battles by Indian and Pakistani forces resulting in India recapturing most of the territories held by Pakistani forces and the subsequent withdrawal of Pakistani forces back across the LOC after the pressure exerted by Bill Clinton, president of US. On 26th July, 1999 (25 years back) Kargil War officially came to an end. Indian Army announced the complete withdrawal of Pakistani irregular and regular forces. Once again Pakistan was beaten in a war, officially called Operation Vijay.
